Rose Brown, the artist:

Born in North Bay, Ontario, Rose grew up with creativity and wonder all around her. Some of her earliest memories are of watching her grandfather sculpt rock and clay. With an eye to practicality she studied commercial art then entered into the graphic design industry. With the beginning of her family Rose chose to be at home giving much of her attention to her two children. The fleeting moments during this period greatly influenced her artistic style.
While working at Timberwolf Art Gallery her paintings flourished with the development of different watercolour techniques. Rose has recently achieved her Environmental Technology diploma, and always looks forward to working outdoors. Her love of science and nature are reflected in the images she chooses to create.

Rose uses many different techniques depending on the subject matter and her ultamate aim. She will use Pen & Ink, as well as watercolour. Some of her paintings are very detailed catching the veins in a wing, while others are looser, though all are bold examples of watercolour. Lately her technique of negative painting turns the tables on the usual lighter to darker methods used by most watercolour astists. This technique starts out with the darkest colours, laying in patches, dropping in brilliant colours and sometimes spraying water on to half dry paint to wash away random areas giving a very organic feel to the image. She layers transparent washes one over the other, building up tone. Then going further and adding many strokes with a much dryer brush, until the painting seems to take on a life of its own.
Rose remains strongly influenced by her training and strives to bring balance and flow to her compositions, keeping in mind the basic concepts of design and colour.
